I will admit that I have been sucked into this series, but the further I get... the less I like Bernadette.**Will probably contain Spoiler-y bits**---->I understand the premise that Bernadette is just a kid trying to live after having a lot thrown at her. She is brash, violent, and bloodthirsty... but then she has no follow through. The scene in the beginning with Kali took me forever to get through. I understand having conflicting emotions for someone, especially when you used to be close. But I also hate when a heroine is supposed to be a badass, then when it really comes down to it, has to be saved. Which is exactly what happened with Bernadette in this scene. Even if she was close with Kalie before and really did not want to kill her, it was kill or be killed and Bernie just laid down to die essentially.----> Bernadette really has only a few thoughts through the entire series so far, running along the various lines of "Things are better when they're stolen", "These boys are hot, lets get down", "Rich people are the worst", "I want vengeance", “everyone here will die young”, and "ebon is a real word.". If maybe a fifth of these repetitive thoughts from the fmc were cut out, I sincerely think the book would've lost 50 pages.---->I think there's been an attempt at the book for some growth within Bernie, with the whole Kalie-Ghost thing, but it was rather poorly executed. It's almost as if CM forgot about it at times, then the ghost would randomly come back and torment her again. Even during all of this her thoughts would briefly be consumed with the ghostie, then resume the aforementioned thought process.----> I also found Bernie's care for her sister and the stress about her going to another school a little over the top. Like she basically ignores her for the entire book (like she's rarely mentioned, then she goes and has a bunch of sleepovers with the boys), but then she's worried about not seeing her? And the whole "she's safer with us thing" is also a little wild, because she's basically always at school or with the babysitter. So I don't see why there was so much drama surrounding this. Maybe it's build up for the next book.---->Ultimately, at the end of the day I think the love story is really contrived. I'm someone who can suspend belief for a book, but the whole "we've loved Bernie since elementary school so we created a gang to make sure we could save her" is maybe a little too much to suspend belief for. I feel like Bernadette could really be anyone. Sure she has been through struggles, but as she frequently states, so has everyone else in their crappy town. I struggle to find anything that sets Bernadette apart from anyone else in this story AND make her so desirable to the five boys that run the school, except for the fact that she's pretty.---->I also felt like the sex scene with all five boys was REALLY weird. I enjoy reading RH, but I think it's weird when authors make it so the men all wait to have a turn. Maybe this was supposed to be some turning point that I missed, but as much as the Havoc boys are a "family" they are all very selfish with Bernadette's time and do not operate like a cohesive unit, at least not in the bedroom.---->The author had posted on her FB page that someone had tagged the word ebon in her book as an error when it is an actual word, which I agree was silly and that person shouldve googled. BUT I also think it's really crappy that she then excessively tried to shame one of her fans in the book with the comments about the word. Like this person is paying you by purchasing your work (as are the rest of us that didn’t tag the word) and instead of just thinking that person made a poor snap judgment and letting it go... you make your other fans read eighteen pages worth of drama over this stupid word? Like that level of immaturity is astounding, and ultimately it added nothing to the book, it just made me think the author is kind of a mean-spirited person. Nah it just not it...her personality is mad annoying like why she gotta be so cocky not confident cocky and the fashion sense makes it hard to read cause what in the 30 year old street hooker is going on.
